Sink / Rise

Sink / Rise, the third chapter of NICK BRANDT’s The Day May Break, addresses the accelerating climate crisis through haunting underwater portraits made in Fiji. People are photographed fully submerged beneath the ocean’s surface, creating dreamlike images that evoke a future in which rising seas threaten coastal communities around the world.

The calm stillness of Brandt’s subjects contrasts with the reality of a warming planet and rising oceans. Many of those portrayed come from communities that have contributed little to global greenhouse gas emissions yet face some of climate change’s greatest consequences, making the series both a meditation on climate injustice and a powerful reminder of the urgent choices confronting humanity.
